NEW DELHI: Prof Umesh Vasudeo Waghmare has been named for the prestigious 26th GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for the year 2016.
Waghmare is a Professor at the Theoretical Science Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore and had been named for the the award for his significant contribution in the area of physics, a statement said.
Prof Waghmare obtained his BTech in Engineering Physics from IIT-Bombay and PhD in Applied Physics from Yale University.
He worked in Physics Department at Harvard University before joining the faculty at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, where is presently a Professor in the Theoretical Science Unit and Dean of Academic Affairs.
His most significant contribution have involved insightful modelling and simulation of materials in terms of phonons, strain, electronic charge, apin and topology that have led to predictions and proper understanding of properties of a variety of multi-functional solids and 2-Dimensional materials.
Prof Waghmare’s work is very well recognised by peers and he has also received several recognitions, including the Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT-Bombay, Infosys Prize in Engineering and Computer Science, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Physical Sciences and B M Birla Science Prize in Physics.
The GD Birla Award for Scientific Research was instituted in 1991 by the KK Birla Foundation with the objective to accord recognition to high calibre scientific research undertaken by Indian Scientists living and working in India.
The award also carries a cash prize of Rs 2.50-lakh. (AGENCIES)
