JAMMU, Feb 21: The Mycological Society of India (MSI), a premier and one of the oldest mycological societies of India, has nominated Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Head, Department of Botany, University of Jammu, Jammu as its vice president for the year 2016-17.
The announcement to this effect was made during the executive council meeting of MSI convened under the presidentship of world renowned scientist, Prof BN Johri during 42nd annual MSI meeting and National conference on ‘Emerging Trends in Fungal Biology and Plant Protection’ held recently at CAS in Botany, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
Prior to this, Dr Yash was the council member of this scientific body. Expressing his gratitude to the executive members, Dr Sharma informed the gathering that he would really value this opportunity provided to him to broaden the scope of the mycology and improvement of skills and to work with so many senior mycologists and friends. It would also allow me to pursue my passion for mycological research education and training, he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Mycological Society of India is a scientific body constituted for the advancement of subject of mycology, the study of fungi including mushrooms, molds, truffles, yeasts, lichens, plant pathogens, and medically important fungi.
There are more than 400 members, including professional and upcoming mycologists with varied interests including taxonomy, ecology, pathology, genetics, molecular biology and physiology. The Journal of KAVAKA published under the aegis of Mycological Society of India is one of the oldest journals dedicated to the field on mycological research in India and abroad.
