Proposal on backward area benefit for Kashmiri migrants deferred

JAMMU, June 11: State Cabinet today deferred the proposal of the Social Welfare Department on extending the benefit of backward area/ Actual Line of Control (ALC) to the Kashmiri migrants.
Sources told EXCELSIOR that when the proposal came up for discussion, some Ministers pointed out that this decision would open Pandora’s box and every category of displaced persons would start demanding benefit of backward area on the analogy of Kashmiri migrants.
“Moreover, there is no justification behind extending the benefit of backward area and Actual Line of Control to the Kashmiri migrants, who are presently not residing in such areas”, the Ministers further said, adding “the Government should not take any decision which would create heartburning in some sections of the society”.
Keeping in view the concern expressed by the Ministers, the Cabinet unanimously deferred the proposal of the Social Welfare Department with the direction to the Minister concerned to revisit the proposal in the light of the observations made by the Ministers.
