JAMMU, Jan 29: Tensions escalated at the Janipur Court here today when a police team from Bishnah, led by a PSI, arrived to take the custody of an accused.
Sources said the accused made serious allegations against the PSI, prompting a protest by lawyers, which disrupted the proceedings for a considerable time.
The situation worsened when the lawyers insisted on the removal of the PSI from the court.
To resolve the situation, sources said, SSP Jammu Joginder Singh arrived with a team and assured the lawyers that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the matter, and strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
After this intervention, the PSI was escorted out of the courtroom, they said.
According to sources, Pankaj Singh, who had been arrested by Bishrah police with a pistol and heroin, was brought to court for police remand.
However, a heated argument broke out between the police team and lawyers when the accused raised serious allegations against the police, leading to further escalation, sources said.
There was even a scuffle during the proceedings, they said.
Amidst the chaos, other police personnel arrived, and the PSI was eventually removed from the courtroom, sources said, adding, however, the lawyers continued their protest, demanding strict action against the officer, who was handling the investigation.
In response to the gravity of the situation, senior police officials intervened and engaged in lengthy discussions with the lawyers, assuring them that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, they said.
Afterward, Pankaj Singh was sent into judicial remand, sources added. The situation eventually calmed down after the PSI was removed from the scene.
