RAMBAN, July 30: Around 200 tunnel construction workers, who were disengaged by a sub construction company engaged by NHAI for constructing Maroog- Digdool tunnel, are on strikes for the last seven days at tunnel construction site Digdool in Ramban district.
Sources said that work on 4 km long Digdool-Maroog twin tube tunnel started some three years back after it was allotted to TaTa Projects which sublet tunnel excavation to Unique UHPC Macro Line LLC and this company further sublet it to DISS, Infra Pvt. Ltd.
“Two years back the tunnel work was started by DISS Infra Pvt. Ltd which engaged 180 skilled and unskilled workers for the work but due to some reasons Unique UHPC Macro Line LLC disengaged DISS Infra Pvt Ltd including its workers,” sources informed.

They said that the construction company Unique UHPC Macro Line LLC has now decided to do the remaining tunnel construction by engaging workers as per their requirements due to which over 200 workers, who have diligently worked for the last two years went on strike at tunnel construction site.
They blamed that the construction company Unique UHPC Macro Line LLC sidelined the local skilled and unskilled workers and may engage men from other parts of the country at the cost of local youths.
The protesters said that NHAI, Project Installation Unit Ramban and main contractor company TaTa Projects have failed to address their issue so far.
Meanwhile on the seventh day of protest today former National president NSUI, Fairoz Khan extended support to the protesting workers and said that disengagement has left 126 skilled local workers jobless and many of these are land donors to the project.
Project Director, NHAI Ramban was not available for comments.
