Srinagar, July 14: Hundreds of labourers and sand extractors staged protests against the Geology and Mining Department for forcing them to pay bribe on routine work of sand extraction in Madhumati stream at Bandipora.
Protesters alleged that they were stopped to extract sand from the river after sand extractors refused to pay bribe demanded by one officer from Department of Geology and Mining.
The sand extractors from Kaloosa, Nathpora and Bandipora earlier also staged several protest against the department demanding stern action against those involved in the corruption and forced bribery in the area.
“Earlier in April, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora recommended transfer of the Geology and Mining Officer after he was found involved in forcing his subordinate officials to collect commission from local contractors and quarry owners,” the protesters said.
