Srinagar Aug 20 : Residents of Baramulla’s old town today protested against the Power Development Department (PDD) for raising monthly rates, demanding that the tariff spike be reversed immediately.
Under the banner of “Shehre Khass Welfare,” the protesters staged a demonstration outside the office of the PDD. They chanted anti-PDD slogans and denounced the PDD’s monthly tariff hikes.
“By resorting to such unilateral actions, PDD is causing people to suffer,” they said, adding that they do not comprehend the reasoning behind the abrupt increase in the electricity bill.
According to a local, the increase in power tariff is exacerbating their problems. “We are unable to pay double electrical bills,” he said. He claimed that the government has not issued any orders to raise electricity costs, and that “old town Baramulla has been especially targeted by the department, while the rest of Kashmir is paying lower tariffs than us.”
The protestors said that the old town of Baramulla is made up of impoverished and unemployed families, and that it is “unfair” that they are forced to suffer. “This unfair practise is causing a huge public outcry,” they said.
Another protester said that PDD ignores their complaints and sends them huge bills that are beyond their means. “We want the Government to pay attention to our issues and find a feasible solution to our demands,” the protestors shouted.
