SAMBA, Mar 19: Local residents of Jatwal staged a strong protest against the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday, demanding the construction of a flyover at the main chowk of Jatwal.
Residents argue that without a flyover, daily commuting will become difficult, and small shopkeepers in Jatwal will face economic losses. The demand for a flyover is longstanding, with multiple protests held in the past. In response, the authorities had approved an underpass measuring 23 feet wide and 11 feet high, but locals find it inadequate.
The non-construction of a flyover could affect people from six panchayats situated on both sides of the highway. The main chowk in Jatwal serves as a crucial link to border villages, frequently used by residents. Protesters highlight concerns about emergency access, stating that in case of shelling from Pakistan, transporting the injured to hospitals could be problematic. Additionally, military and paramilitary forces may face difficulties in maneuvering heavy vehicles during times of border tension.
Former Sarpanch of Panchayat Patyari Katlan, Jagg Ram Sharma, reiterated that the demand for a flyover has been pending for two years, emphasizing the potential losses to local businesses. Another resident, Gangeshwar Sharma, stressed that cultivable land exists on both sides of the highway and that a flyover would ease movement significantly.
The protesters vowed to continue their agitation until their demand is met, asserting that they are prepared to take any necessary steps to achieve their goal.
