POONCH, June 29: The villagers from Kalai held protest demonstration and blocked road for over two and half hours as a woman who was hit by a tipper kept lying on the road near Kalai bridge for over 45 minutes and succumbed to injuries despite the fact that security force naka was hardly 50 meters away.
A mentally retarded woman, was hit by an unknown tipper at around 9 am near Kalai bridge on Poonch-Surankote road. The vehicle sped away after hitting the woman. She kept lying there for long. There is police and army security picket at the bridge. The security men remained mute spectators to the incident and did not bother to shift the woman to hospital or convey message to concerned police.
The woman was kept lying on the road unattended and succumbed.
Residents of the area when came to know about the incident, expressed strong resentment over the attitude of the security men on duty. They blocked the road and held massive protest demonstration against them. They alleged that tipper escaped after hitting woman in front of cops and they remained inactive. The locals raised barricades and disrupted movement of traffic for long. Vehicles of several district level and other officers who had to join District Development Board meeting at Poonch today were also got stranded on this busy Jammu-Poonch highway.
Later, Tehsildar Poonch, Mr Nissar, DySP headquarters Haq Nawaj and SHO Sanjeev Slathia rushed to the spot. They assured the people to trace the Tipper and take action in this regard. Thereafter, the people lifted dharna from the road at around 12 noon. Traffic was then restored on the road and the body of the deceased was later shifted to hospital. The police registered a case in this connection
