POONCH, Apr 5: The people from Mendhar town and adjoining villages today held strong protest demonstration and blocked Mendhar-Jammu Road for about two hours.
A large number of people, irrespective of their party affiliations, assembled at Shahidi Yadgar Mendhar at around 10.30 am and then started protest demonstration, demanding district status for Mendhar Sub Division. After holding protest there for some time then they moved ahead on the road and stalled movement of vehicles at around 11 AM.
The protesters were shouting slogans in support of their demand. They also raised slogans against PDP-BJP Government for ignoring Mendhar Sub Division having three Tehsils. Several local leaders addressed the gathering and alleged that Mendhar being largest and oldest Sub Division in district Poonch deserved the district status.
SHO Mendhar, Insp Mohd Amin tried to pacify the agitating people and requested them to clear the road but they continued their protest. After some time Tehsildar Shahzad Khan also reached there and he also appealed them to open the road as public was suffering.
Then a delegation of locals amongst protesters moved to the office of SDM Mendhar and submitted a memorandum there and the road was cleared at around 1 pm. They warned to continue their struggle for the district status.
