Protest starts after Tunnel Construction Company retrenches 116 workers

RAMBAN, Nov 14: Construction workers at Digdool-Panthyal 3 km twin tube tunnel here today staged a protest demonstration at the construction site Digdool demanding benefits as per Labour Laws.
The protest started after the sub contractor company, Sarla engaged by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) retrenched 116 workers citing reason that the tunnel construction was near completion.
The protesters claimed that tunnel construction work was still going on and the company was importing workers from other States.
“The construction company is not ready to provide retrenchment benefits to workers which forced us to stage protest,” one of the protesters stated.
A local leader, Advocate Suraj Singh Parihar met the protesting workers and assured them to fight for their cause.
Meanwhile, Project Manager at Sarala Project Works Pvt Ltd, Vijay Nikum said that an announcement was made regarding the retrenchment and prior notice was enclosed with the list of retrenched employees which was displayed on notice board of the company.
He appealed to the workers to understand that this decision was in no way a reflection of their performance or commitment but company’s circumstances have changed.
The Manager asked the workers to complete the necessary site clearance process with the site office and suggested them that if they need any assistance, they should feel free to reach out to company’s site office.
It is noteworthy that Digdool-Panthyal twin tube tunnel work was started in the year 2022, and excavation work on both the tubes was completed within a couple of months back.
Remaining tunnel work is expected to be completed within next few months.
