Protesters block NH after woman killed in accident, DM orders probe

RAMBAN, July 27: A young woman was here today crushed to death by a speedy truck near Lamber Toll Plaza in Banihal on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH).
The accident victim was identified as Amina Begum, 30, wife of Mohammad Iqbal Wani, resident of Lamber, Banihal and she was crossing the road when a truck bearing registration number RJ07GD-2498 crushed her.
As news of the accident spread, the people including relatives of the deceased assembled at Lambar and staged a protest demonstration and blocked Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The protesters said that they were demanding foot flyover-bridge in the area since the four lane work was completed by NHAI and the officers had also assured that the bridge will be constructed for the safe crossing of the people and the students but till date nothing has been done.
Later, SHO Banihal, Mohammad Afzal Wani, SDM Banihal, Zaheer Abass and Dy.SP Banihal, Nisar Khoja reached the spot and assured the people that their issue shall be resolved.
On the assurance, the protestors dispersed and the body was shifted to SDH Banihal for post-mortem and other legal formalities and the traffic was restored on the NH.
SHO Banihal, Mohammad Afzal Wani said the driver involved in the accident was arrested.
District Magistrate Ramban, Mussarat Islam has ordered an inquiry into the death of the lady and Sub Divisional Magistrate, Banihal, Zahir Abbas was appointed as Inquiry Officer and he shall investigate all aspects of the case and will submit his detailed report within 7 days.
Meanwhile, District Magistrate Ramban, Mussarat Islam in an official communique invited the attention of the Project Director National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), PIU Ramban for the construction of an overbridge at Lamber, near Toll Plaza Banihal on National Highway-44.
Attention is also invited for considering the demand of the local people for construction of overbridges on National Highway-44 at strategic places in Ramban District, including Asher, Chareel, Lamber, Chanderkote etc so that the local people have hassle-free access in movement from one place to the other.
