JAMMU, June 4: Irked over frequent unscheduled power cuts, the Jammuites today staged protests against the Government over frequent power cuts and irregular water supply by blocking roads in several localities of the winter capital of State and across the district.
The residents of various localities blocked the roads at several places including Rehari, Sarwal, etc. They raised slogans against Power Development Department (PDD) and Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department. The protesters were demanding uninterrupted power and water supplies.
The protesters were alleging that despite paying regular bills, their areas have been witnessing long duration power cuts.
“Although we are made to pay power tariff but PDD is imposing long duration power cuts. For past few months, power is playing hide and seek and often goes off for hours together in the evenings”, one of the protesters said.
We are facing immense problems due to the erratic power supply in our areas”, the protesters said, adding that for the past sometime there have been frequent cuts in our area during this scorching heat.
It has become very difficult to spend time during power cuts in prevailing hot weather conditions, they said, adding that it has become routine now during summer months.
They added that the students who are in the middle of taking various exams suffer the most, adding that old age persons and toddlers are worst affected due to unscheduled power cuts.
The protesters said that they had many a time approached PDD and administration about the issue but they failed to redress the concern.
“Due to power curtailment, we are also facing water scarcity for the past several weeks and no one from the Administration has come to redress the problem till date, which forced them to come on roads”, a lady protester stated, adding that non-availability of the drinking water has forced the people to fetch water from distant places in scorching heat.
