SRINAGAR, May 29: Kashmir University students today held a protest on the fifth anniversary of the mysterious death of two women in South Kashmir’s Shopian.
The students assembled near Iqbal Library to demand justice for the victims whose bodies were found under mysterious circumstances near a shallow stream on the outskirts of the town.
Holding placards with signs like ‘Justice to Neelofar and Asiya’ and ‘Punish the Culprits’, the protesters gathered in a park near the library since morning.
Two young women, Asiya and Neelofar were found missing in mysterious conditions in their home town Shopian on May 30, 2009 and according to locals then the women were allegedly kidnapped, raped and killed.
However, the CBI probe into the Shopian tragedy concluded that the duo had died due to drowning in the Rambiara Nallah.
The students while paying tributes to Asiya and Neelofar said, “We cannot forget our sisters who lost their chastity and lives only because they belonged to an oppressed region.”
The family members with a few common people held a sit in near the Zaora Bridge, Thursday, on Rambiara Nallah in Shopian to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of Asiya and Neelofar.
The husband of Neelofar and brother of Asiya, Shakeel Ahmad Ahangar, his father in law, brothers and close relatives including children were among the people holding placards reading slogans like “Shopian tragedy: Conclusion….! outcome of illegal occupation”.
Hurriyat has called a shutdown in district Shopian on May 30 to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of the two women.
