JAMMU, Mar 25: Terming it as sheer wastage of tax payers’ money, the general public in Gandhi Nagar area has strongly opposed laying of thick concrete back lanes in some area of posh Gandhi Nagar locality.
The local residents said that JMC is laying 6 to 8 inch concrete back lanes in some areas of Gandhi Nagar these days. They pointed out that beneath are the PHE pipes. Who will break this concrete lanes, if someone has water problem, they questioned.
Such a thick concrete lanes have left substantial part of back lane along the existing drains. The level difference of the concrete lane and existing drain along with additional leftover area is dangerous for cars and other vehicles.
Intriguing, side by side black topping is also apace in some areas. No stakeholders know what’s happening as they are never consulted or even cared to inform them. It is just `spending- spree’ in last days of March and `sheer wastage’ of public money. There was black topping in these lanes earlier and now are being replaced by thick concrete lanes perhaps under so called `Smart City’ programme.
A senior engineer in JMC and former JMC chairman, Narinder Singh when contacted said that during meeting with Principal Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department recently, it was suggested to lay strong concrete lanes/ roads where road is often gets broken with water flow or where there is heavy flow of traffic. This is being done only such areas. They said even if where concrete layer is being laid, side two feet area along drains has been left for water pipes and it will be covered by tiles or some other material for the convenience of the PHE staff and public.
