JAMMU, Jan 4: Pulse Hospital Jammu has made a significant achievement by successfully performing the first-ever laryngectomy for a rare cancer known as laryngeal chondrosarcoma in Jammu.
The patient, a laborer from RS Pura who had been working in Dubai, was diagnosed with this uncommon cancer of the voice box after a biopsy.
He returned to Jammu and sought treatment at the Jammu ENT Clinic and Research Centre.
Advanced imaging tests, including CT and MRI scans, confirmed the presence of a tumor in the right thyroid cartilage that had spread to nearby areas.
Because the tumor did not respond to radiation or chemotherapy, surgery was the only option.
A team of expert surgeons at Pulse Hospital, led by Dr Nitika Mehta and Dr Satish Mehta, performed the delicate surgery. Dr Nandita Mehta, a senior anesthesiologist, managed the anesthesia during the procedure.
The team removed the patient’s larynx and, in an innovative step, inserted a Provox Vega voice prosthesis during surgery.
This allowed the patient to regain his ability to speak after the procedure. The surgery team, including Anil, Tavinder Bali, Shahid, Rameez, Insha, and Naresh, provided vital support.
The patient has recovered well and is now living a healthy, cancer-free life.
Sohail Qasim, Chairman of Pulse Hospital, said, “This is a major milestone for Pulse Hospital and demonstrates our commitment to providing world-class healthcare in Jammu.”
Dr Bhupinder Singh, Executive Director of Pulse Hospital, added, “We are proud to have achieved this milestone, which highlights our growing expertise in handling complex medical cases.”
