As if September 2014 floods were not sufficient to bring misery and discomfort to the ordinary people in district Pulwama in South Kashmir, fresh rains have brought another spell of physical distress to them. About a dozen of diversions which had to be made at various spots along the nullahs are washed down by fresh rains cutting off surface communication between Pulwama and Srinagar. These were temporary diversions meant to keep the flow of traffic intact till permanent bridges or culverts were constructed. But the weather conditions do not want to give any respite to the suffering people. The Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama has written to the Government that restoration of connectivity would need at least a sum of ten crore rupees which should be released to the district authorities immediately.
The entire issue has two aspects. One is to provide the permanent bridges that can stand the weather crisis. The second is to provide temporary relief and make-shift arrangements for the people who need to cross the rising nullahs and streams if they intend to reach Srinagar. Bailey Bridges are recommended by the DC and the Engineering Department should consider the suggestion in right earnest. Building regular and lasting bridges may take some time but people have to carry on with day to day chores of life. Intermediate connectivity should be restored immediately and long term regular connectivity also has to be begun with all seriousness.
