Rafting boat capsizes in Chenab, toddler among pilgrims rescued

REASI, May 21: A major tragedy was averted when a toddler among five pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh and some trainee girls from a school in Pouni were rescued after their rafting boat capsized in Chenab river, here today.
The incident took place this morning around 10.45 am when one raft of a private company, in which five girls of Government Higher Secondary School Pouni and four pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh alongwith one infant were travelling from lower Talwara towards Kanshi Patta, suddenly flipped near Baradari bridge at Talwara Reasi. The trainee girls alongwith pilgrims and Rafting guide slipped out from the raft due to rash and negligent navigation of Rafting guide Rahul Verma of Aghar Ballian, said a Police spokesman. Even as all the members were wearing life jackets, one and half year old child of a pilgrim couple was without safety jacket and was feared to drown when one trainee girl namely Pooja Rajput daughter of Chatter Singh of Pouni, Reasi, and two local boys namely Liyaqat Ali son of Mohd Bashir Ahmed of Zero Morh and Mohd Mahroof son of Mohd Yaqoob of Zero Morh Talwara Reasi rescued the victim. Meanwhile, District Police and SDRF teams also reached the spot and rescued all other persons also.
For their bravery and rescuing the life of child, Pooja Rajput and Liyaqat Ali as well as Mohd Mahroof were honoured and given cash award by SSP Reasi Nisha Nathyal.
