Due to frequent disruptions and suspension of railway traffic on Baramulla- Banihal railway line, coupled with the peculiar volatile situation in Kashmir valley, Indian Railways have suffered huge net losses during the last three years.
Railways and in Kashmir valley , till a few years back, was being considered a distant possibility and never ever believed that railway engines could be chugging through different areas of Kashmir. It is but understandable that to keep the Railways moving, it is necessary that it should arrive at a breakeven point toprogressively reach earning profits. Railways comparatively have to spend more on their operations in the valley as compared to plains across the country.
No venture could and should remain in business if it does not at least recover its input costs, not to speak of posting losses. That during the last three years, The Railways had to suffer a net loss of Rs. 5 crores is a matter of concern. The networking of the Railways in the Valley is reasonably adequate as except for one day of the week, 15 pairs of train ferry around thirty thousand passengers, mostly students and employees between Baramulla and Banihal and the source of revenue being from passenger tickets only , snapping of services result in heavy losses. Ways and means, however, have to be devised to reverse this trend so that due profits are earned by the Railways and with gradual increase every year.
