SRINAGAR, Apr 19: Moderate to heavy rains lashed plains of Jammu and Kashmir while upper reaches experienced a fresh snowfall resulting in drop in the temperature on Wednesday, officials said.
The Meteorological Department predicted intermittent light to moderate rain at most places of Kashmir & at scattered places of Jammu today with significant decrease from today evening.
It said intermittent light to moderate rain at scattered places can occur from April 20-22 and thereafter the weather mainly will remain dry till April 25.
Upper reaches of Kupwara, Bandipora, Zojila and Pir Panjal range of mountains experienced a fresh snowfall resulting in considerable drop in temperature.
The plains of Kashmir valley including Srinagar experienced heavy to moderate intermittent rainfall disrupting normal activities on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr likely to be celebrated on Friday or Saturday, depending upon the appearance of crescent.
The day temperature in most places of Jammu and Kashmir remained below 4 – 10 degree Celsius forcing people and tourists to wear warm clothes. Night temperature was recorded 2-3 degree Celsius below normal in Kashmir valley.
Regarding the rainfall, the MeT office said Srinagar received 15.9 mm, Qazigund had 30.0 mm of rainfall, Pahalgam 41.0 mm, Kupwara 26.9 mm, Kokernag 25 mm and Gulmarg 49.6 mm, Udhampur 15.8 mm, Jammu 17.1 mm, Katra 22.2 mm and Kathua 3.4 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours till 0830 hours this morning.
Srinagar recorded a low of 10.3 degree celsius against the 11 degree Celsius the previous night and it was 2.4 degree Celsius above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
The maximum temperature was recorded 5.8 degree Celsius below normal in Srinagar on Wednesday against 21.1 degree Celsius on Tuesday.
Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of 9.2 degree Celsius against 9.8 degree Celsius the previous day which was 2.7 degree Celsius above normal at the gateway of Kashmir.
Tourist hot spot of Pahalgam recorded a low of 5.4 degree Celsius against 5.6 degree Celsius the previous night and it was 2.0 degree Celsius above normal.
Kokernag had a low of 6.5 degree Celsius and Kupwara recorded a low of 6.8 degree Celsius.
Gulmarg in North Kashmir recorded a low of 2.0 degree Celsius which was 0.3 degree Celsius below normal for the ski resort on Wednesday, the MeT office said.
