Rains lash J&K, 10.4 deg fall in Jammu’s temp; NH blocked for 7 hrs, restored

JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Apr 1: The rain lashed parts of Jammu and Kashmir today bringing the day temperature of Jammu down by 10 degrees and another spell of wet weather is likely from early next week.
A sharp fall in day temperature ranging from 9 to 10 degrees Celsius has been observed in Jammu today as compared to past 24 hours while higher reaches of Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar and Poonch have experienced light snowfall during last night.
Jammu, Udhampur, Reasi, Samba and Kathua and their adjoining areas witnessed constant rain for about 4-5 hours during morning upto noon. Several seasonal nallahs and streams were flooded and it affected movement of traffic. Jammu city witnessed water logging at many places. Very thin movement of public was witnessed on city roads during rain today.
Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked due to landslides at Ramperi near Banihal and Cafeteria Morh near Ramban around 2 am last night. The road was restored at around 9 am today and Kashmir bound stranded traffic was cleared first followed by down convoy from Qazigund side to Udhampur and Jammu.
Udhampur-Pancheri-Landhar- Gilyot road was blocked due to flood in a nallah near Landar and landslide at Kultiar. Several vehicles remained stranded for hours. The power supply to many areas was also affected with this.

A western disturbance will affect weather in the Jammu and Kashmir from April 3 to April 6 due to which, many places will experience light to moderate intermittent rainfall, Director of the Meteorological Department Sonam Lotus said.
He said many areas in the Union Territory fo J&K including Srinagar and Jammu, received rain since early morning. Lotus said the weather will remain as such till the evening and the temperature will drop about five to six degrees. He said on Sunday, there will be some respite and the weather will improve. “But, there is a possibility of rain in the evening at some places,” he added.
The higher reaches could receive snowfall, however, there is no forecast of heavy rain/snowfall, Lotus said.
The weather will remain inconsistent till April 6, after which it will improve and the temperatures will also increase, he said.
Meanwhile, Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 14.7 degree Celsius, about five degree fall as compared to last 24 hours. The day temperature in Jammu was 19 degree Celsius today as compared to 29. 4 degree C on Friday, indicating a sharp fall of 10.4 degree C as compared to past 24 hours.
Holy town of Katra recorded a maximum temp of 15.0 deg C and minimum 12.8 deg C; Bhaderwah town maximum 12.5 and minimum 7.4 deg C; Banihal town maximum 9.2 deg C and minimum 8.4 deg while Batote maximum temp of 9.5 deg C and minimum 81 degree Celsius temperature today.
Leh town recorded a minimum temperature of -1.2 deg C and maximum 6.8 deg C temp while Kargil town of Ladakh minimum temperature of 2.1 deg C today.
Meanwhile, Kashmir was lashed by heavy rains with some hills receiving light snowfall today bringing down the temperature while the weatherman has forecast more rains till April 6.
Heavy rains lashed Kashmir valley today since morning. However, there was some relief in the evening. Some hills received fresh snowfall bringing down the temperatures across the region.
Director Meteorological Department (MeT), Sonum Lotus, said here that there is a possibility of partly to generally cloudy weather conditions tomorrow. He said that there is a possibility of a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm towards evening at scattered places.
From 3rd April to 6th April, he said that there is a possibility of intermittent rain and thunderstorms at many places.
The minimum temperatures recorded an increase at most places and settled above normal in Jammu and Kashmir.
The MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 9.1°C against 7.9°C the previous night and it was 2.7°C above normal for the city.
Qazigund, recorded a low of 8.0°C against 6.8°C the previous night and it was 2.9°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 4.6°C against 3.2°C the previous night and it was 2.9°C above normal for the tourist resort.
Kokernag recorded a low of 6.0°C against 5.3°C the previous night and it was 0.9°C above normal for the place.
Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.8°C against 0.4°C the previous night and it was 1.6°C above normal for the skiing resort.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 6.8°C against 5.7°C the previous night and it was 1.6°C above normal for the town.
