Flash floods in parts of Valley

Srinagar, July 22: Rains lashed Kashmir with Weatherman forecasting more downpour and there were flash floods in parts of the Valley due to heavy showers.
“Light to moderate rain/thundershower at many places are expected in Jammu and Kashmir during next 24 hours,” a Meteorological department official said.
On July 23, he said, intermittent light to moderate rain was expected at scattered places of J&K.
On July 24-25, he said, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected. “A brief spell of rain may occur at some places.” On July 26-28, he said, no large change is expected.
There were widespread rains in Kashmir with heavy showers at many places leading to flash floods. There were also cloudbursts at some places.
The torrential rains triggered flash floods in Lolab area of Kupwara district. The villages including Gundmachar, Khurhama and Shalagund witnessed damage to agricultural crops and orchards due to flash floods. Several roads have also suffered damage.
The inhabitants have appealed to the authorities to assess the loss caused and accordingly compensate the victims.
The flash floods due to cloudburst created panic among the villagers in Damhal Hanjipora area in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district this evening.
There has been a sudden downflow of water in many areas of Damhal Hanjipora due to cloudburst in upper reaches while no loss of human life has been reported so far.
Water gushed into residential houses, apple orchards, caused damage to the boundary walls of a Higher Secondary and Middle School in Khurbatpora while inundating the roads as well.
The affected area include Tangmarg, Korel, Chogalpora, Kurbatpora, Chachmulla and Jaibal area of Damhal Hanjipora.
There was also cloudburst in Mulnar in the outskirts of Srinagar causing flash floods in Faqir Gujri area of Srinagar. Several houses suffered minor damage.
The rains also led to waterlogging of roads in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley.
In the meantime, Srinagar recorded a low of 19.4°C, Qazigund 25.8°C, Pahalgam 16.0°C, Kupwara 18.6°C, Kokernag 17.7°C and Gulmarg 13.5°C.
