NEW DELHI, June 7:
On the eve of World Brain Tumour Day, medical professionals on Wednesday emphasised on raising people’s awareness about the symptoms of the disease, which can manifest in various forms, for its early detection and immediate intervention.
Dr Manish Vaish, senior director of neurosurgery at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Vaishali said brain tumours constitute approximately two per cent of all malignancies globally and present a formidable health challenge.
“In India alone, an estimated 40,000 new cases of brain tumours are reported annually. These figures underscore the urgency for immediate action and the significance of raising awareness,” he said.
Studies reveal that brain tumours can affect individuals of all age groups.
These tumours can manifest in various forms, including both benign and malignant types, experts said, adding that common types of brain tumours include gliomas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas and acoustic neuromas.
Dr Yashpal Singh Bundela, a senior consultant at Sushrut Brain and Spine PPL, New Delhi, said that raising people’s awareness about the disease is crucial.
“By educating people about the tell-tale signs and symptoms associated with these tumours, we empower individuals to seek timely medical attention. Persistent headaches, seizures, cognitive changes and balance problems are common early warning signs that should never be trivialised,” he said.
According to experts, early detection plays a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes and enhancing patients’ quality of life.
“The sooner brain tumours are diagnosed, the more options are available for treatment, including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Medical advancements and neurosurgical techniques have significantly improved the prognosis for individuals with brain tumours,” Dr Vaish said.
“By identifying tumours at an early stage, doctors can develop more effective treatment plans and improve patient outcomes. Swiftly recognizing brain tumour symptoms can make a life-saving difference,” he said.
Dr Vaish warned that ignoring the early symptoms of brain tumours can have devastating consequences.
“For anyone with these persistent symptoms, immediate consultation with a neuro specialist is imperative. Seeking their professional guidance at the earliest can significantly improve treatment outcomes and overall prognosis,” he added. (PTI)
