JAMMU, Apr 11: In the back drop of meeting convened by Chief Minister with the civil and police administration in Srinagar, Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar reviewed the traffic management scenario in the State at a high level meeting held at Police headquarters (PHQ) here today.
He stressed the need for traffic management in a professional manner so that improvement is visible on ground and people feel the change.
Mr. Rajendra while reviewing the functioning of traffic police emphasised on coordinated efforts by the stake holders to bring visible improvements in the traffic regulation in the twin capital cities and other towns in the State. He said that considerable increase in traffic and shrinking roads have made traffic management a challenging task which needs efficient efforts and proper supervision. He asked for putting in effective management strategies to ease the difficulties of the people caused by traffic jams.
The meeting discussed various measures put in place to bring innovative changes in the traffic management and the results achieved thereof. It was told that additional manpower has been pressed into service and modern gadgets introduced to improve the management. Traffic patrols have also been deployed to ensure smooth traffic movement on National Highway and other vital routes.
During the meeting it was decided that traffic wing will be further strengthened by providing more manpower including the supervisory officers so that the routes including the district headquarters and places of religious and tourist importance are covered sufficiently. Augmentation of vehicles for the traffic police was also decided in the meeting.
Mr. Rajendra asked to deploy more manpower at bottlenecks, where there are frequent traffic jams. He said that bus stops should be identified in consultation with other concerned departments for convenience of the passengers. Use of meters by the auto rikshaws should also be ensured to curb overcharging, said the DGP.
DGP stressed for taking extra steps to ensure better traffic management in the capital cities. He asked for diversion of traffic through alternate routes on the roads where some works are under execution. It was also decided that Special DG Coordination (PHQ) would coordinate the efforts among different agencies and monitor the improvements made on the ground.
Mr. Rajendra asked the officers to work in synergy with other agencies to get feedback and introduce new strategy for bringing improvement in the system. He said that traffic movement on National Highway is expected to increase in the coming days in view of darbar move, Amar Nath Yatra and tourist inflow. He asked the concerned to brace up and ensure better management on National Highway so that the commuters do not have any difficulty while travelling. He asked to involve traffic volunteers, NGOs and educational institutions to bring awareness among the masses.
Among others, the meeting was attended by DG (Coordination), SK Mishra, ADGP (Headquarters) VK Singh, ADGP (Armed) L. Mohanti, IGP (Jammu Zone) Danesh Rana, IGP Incharge Traffic, Shafakat Watali, AIG (Personnel), Tahir Sajad and other senior police officers.
