NEW DELHI : The Rajya Sabha today adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to Congress veteran and Union Labour and Employment Minister Sis Ram Ola, who died yesterday after a prolonged illness.
“In passing away of Sis Ram Ola, the country has lost an able administrator and a distinguished Parliamentarian,” Chairman Hamid Ansari said.
The House observed a minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed. Then Dr Ansari adjourned the House for the day.
Earlier, the Chairman administered an oath of affirmation to Congress member Pramod Kumar and Samajwadi Party member Kanak Lata Singh.
Ola passed away yesterday at a private hospital in Gurgaon. He was 86.
In 1996, he had been elected to the 11th Lok Sabha and served as Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers and Water Resources.
He was also relected to the Lower House of Parliament in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009.
Ola was awarded the Padmashree in 1968 for his contribution to women and child development and education.
He was elected to the Rajasthan Assembly eight times from 1957 to 1990 and handled several portfolios. (AGENCIES)
