LEH, May 12: To express anguish over implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA) in Ladakh region, Panchayat Coordination Committee (PCC) and Numberdars of Leh district held a mass peaceful rally.
Raising slogans to oppose implementation of NFSA in the region a large number of people participated in the rally which started from NSD Sports Ground to historical Polo Ground. While addressing PCC secretary Rigzin Namgyal highlighted the NFSA issue. He said all the peaceful initiatives against the implementation have proved futile thereby forcing the people to hold the rally to alert our leaders.
Numberdar of Skyanos Gogsum area, Tsewang Dorjey said, it was high time for all stakeholders including all political parties to make efforts to bring some fruitful result on this issue. He said as per old practice each individual used to get 13 kg per head which has now reduced to 5 kg per soul which is a setback to us as Ladakh region remains cut off from rest of the world for six months and therefore we need to give a united fight against this act.
Sarpanch Tsering Angchok said Ladakh region with harsh climatic conditions can grow single crop in a year and therefore the people mostly depend on rice as main food and the recent implementation of NFSA was a setback to the people.
Meanwhile, all the business establishments including restaurants remained closed for half day to lodge protest over NFSA and during the period Leh city wore a deserted look.
