JAMMU, Dec 22: The renowned Indian Mathematician of international repute, Srinivasa Ramanujan, was remembered across the State on its birth anniversary, which is celebrated as National Mathematics Day all over the Country. On this occasion, a one-day Students’ Mathematical Conference was organized today by Department of Mathematics, at GGM Science College Jammu. About 17 colleges all over the Jammu Province took part in the conference. Principal of the college, in his address, explained the importance of Mathematics in every branch of Science. The organizing secretary of the conference, Dr Sunil Gupta informed the audience that this conference is just a tribute on the 128th birth Anniversary of Srinivasa Rananujan, an internationally known Indian Mathematician, which is falling on today. Dr Ashok Koul, a well known Mathematician who was the Resource Person of the conference delivered a key note address in the conference. He in his address showed the application of Mathematics in day-to-day life. Jaspreet Kour of GCET, Jammu, Dhruvika Pandita, GCET, Jammu and Abhinav of GGM Science College, Jammu, were judged as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, respectively for their best presentations in the conference. Department of Mathematics of Government College for Women (GCW) Gandhi Nagar, Jammu under the aegis of Science Club in collaboration with J&K Council for Science and Technology, DST Jammu celebrated National Mathematics Day. Prof SD Sharma, Head, Department of Mathematics, Central University of Jammu (CUJ) was the Resource Person whereas Dr Kiran Bakshi, Principal of the college was the chief guest. Dr Anupama Gupta welcomed the guests and highlighted the contribution of Indian Mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, to popularize this subject among the masses. Prof SD Sharma spoke on “Fascinating World of Cardinal Numbers”. Dr Kiran Bakshi in her address exhorted students to take benefit of his lecture and develop deep understanding of this subject which will develop their further interest for pursuing higher studies. Government Degree College (GDC) Budhal celebrated National Mathematics Day by organizing a day-long seminar on mathematics. Principal of the college, Dr Shakeel Ahmed Raina presided over the function and delivered a power point presentation on “Life and Contribution of Ramanujan.” Abdul Qayoom Malik (Retd Principal) was the chief guest on the occasion. A symposium on “Importance of Mathematics” was also organized. In school category, Attiya Rehman bagged 1st position where as 2nd and 3rd positions were bagged by Tasveer Akhter and Tayba Shawl. In the college category, Zahid Farooq bagged first position and Layaqat Ali got 2nd position where as Waseem Shabnam and Waheed Khan shared 3rd position. Prof Altaf Ahmed, Prof Priksha Raina and Abdul Qayoom acted as jury members for the symposium. Career Abacus, a leading abacus teaching institute organized Speedy Math Competition in connection with National Mathematics Day. Director of the Institute, Arvind Sharma informed the participants that the day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of great mathematician of India, Srinivasa Ramanujan to commemorate his contributions to Mathematics. The Institute celebrated full week as Mathematics week and competition was held in the different centers of the Institute. More than 300 students participated in the competition. Students from UKG to 8th from different schools participated in this competition.
