JAMMU, Dec 22: Provincial President National Conference Devender Singh Rana today called for promoting and popularizing Dogri in a big way, saying much onus lies on intellectuals and artists to generate interest among the young people for this lucid language.
“We should be proud of our mother tongue and make its optimal use in daily dealings”, he said at a felicitation function held in honour of the Sahitya Academy award winner Sita Ram Saploia at Jammu University this afternoon.
Mr Rana regretted the trend of shying away from speaking in mother tongue, adding that parents are squarely to be blamed for such a scenario. “Speaking in other languages, English and Hindustani, is viewed as a sign of modernity and those making use of their own language are seen as living in a bygone era”, he lamented while saying that there should be intense urge to learn other languages but not at the cost of mother tongue. He exhorted the writers to ponder over these tendencies and work for restoring Dogri its pristine glory.
The Provincial President complimented the organizations engaged in promoting Dogri and said that it is due to their strenuous efforts that this language has been included in the Eight Schedule of Constitution. This revolutionary measure has opened up vistas of opportunities for promoting the language and bequeathing it for posterity as a treasure.
The felicitation function was addressed by eminent Dogri writers and intellectuals which included Dr Ved Kumari Ghai, Prof Shiv Dev Manhas, Head Department of Dogri, University of Jammu, Prof Champa Sharma, Mohan Singh Slayhia, President Duggar Manch, Prof Shashi Pathania, Anjali Sharma, Nardev Singh Jamwal, Dr Sunil Sharma, Rakesh Chib and others.
On this occasion, Mr Rana felicitated Mr Sapolia for his coveted award and said this will inspire the younger generation to give their best to the language. He hoped that the writers like Mr Sapolia will encourage budding writers and guide them in their literary pursuits. This will help in generating literary atmosphere, which is per-requisite for promotion of any language, he maintained.
