SRINAGAR, Sept 12: Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at SKIMS has done Pancreaticoduodenectomy operation, the first of its kind in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
A team of surgeons headed by the renowned pancreatic surgeon Professor Omar Javed Shah conducted this unique surgery in four- hours and the patient is recovering fast. He said that surgery would improve survival and reduce morbidity and mortality.
“Over the years the operative mortality rate of pancreatectomy combined with portal vein resection has greatly decreased, and portal vein resection in pancreatic surgery has become a well-tolerated operative procedure in large-volume centers,” he said.
He added that Pancreaticoduodenectomy is the treatment of choice for cancer of the head of the pancreas. However, this treatment is applicable only to a minority with the disease. Approximately one-third present with locally advanced disease. In view of the close proximity between the head of the pancreas and the portal/superior mesenteric vein confluence, it is logical for surgeons to seek to expand the pool of patients who may benefit from pancreaticoduodenectomy by undertaking en bloc resection of the vein.
Pertinently, Professor Shah has already designed a new Internationally acclaimed technique of performing Pancreaticoduodenectomy which has already found its place in world literature.
