Rare Syndromic child treated successfully at Narayana Hospital

REASI, July 16: A 13-year-old boy with diagnosed case of “Silver-Russell- Syndrome” has been successfully treated at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Katra by Dr Arjun Malhotra, Consultant (Craniofacial & Head Neck Reconstructive Surgeon).
Speaking about the case, Dr Malhotra described that the child was brought to him with the complaint of cleft palate and stiff neck. On proper evaluation, patient was diagnosed with Silver- Russell syndrome, which has features of Torticollis, Cleft palate, club foot along with some other features.
Dr Malhotra explained that incidence of Silver-Russell syndrome is expected to be around 1 in 1 lakh births and hence is considered a rare entity and such patients should undergo reconstruction of deformities in early childhood. Since the child had already attained age of 13 years administering anaesthesia and conducting surgery – both were challenging.
He said after proper treatment planning, it was planned to operate child in two stages. In the first stage, cleft palate was operated and in the second stage, Torticollis with severe banding and neck contracture was corrected keeping a gap of six months between the two procedures.
“Both the surgeries were performed under PM-Ayushman Bharat Yojana and surgeries led to overall correction of deformities of the child,” said Dr Malhotra. He explained that such kind of complex procedure require multidisciplinary approach with proper support from Paediatricians, Anaesthesia and hospital management.
