Ray of hope emerges for deaf children in Jammu

JAMMU, Dec 1:  A ray of hope for deaf children has emerged with successful conduct of `Cochlear Implant Surgery’ by ENT Department HoD Dr Sunil Kotwal and Dr JM Hans in SMGS Hospital of the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu.
“With this surgery, the children can have normal hearing and speech especially if operated in initial years of life between two to three years,” Dr Kotwal said.
After conducting two surgeries, the ENT Department of the GMC Jammu conducted live surgical workshop on cochlear implants in which 25 deaf children were screened.
Dr JM Hans also performed two live surgeries during the camp. Both the children were below two years of age and were covered under RBSK Scheme of Government of India and were provided assistance of Rs 5.2 lakh each by Health and Medical Education Ministry.
GMC Principal Dr Ganshyam Dev Gupta, SMGS Medical Superintendent Dr Dara Singh, Dr Sunil Kotwal, Dr Pramod Kalsotra, Dr Padam Singh, Dr Anil Suri, Dr Sonika Kanotra, Dr Mohan Lal, Dr Kamal Kishore, Dr Om Prakash, Dr Gopika and many other doctors from ENT and Pediatrics Department of the GMC attended the workshop.
