Red Cross enters its 100th year

The, Red Cross Day is being observed on May 8 every year with enthusiasm in the Jammu and Kashmir State as elsewhere in the country. The theme for 2019 is “WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RED CROSS? ”. The Indian Red Cross Society has lived up to its notoriety of rendering caring support of the people in trouble due to natural or man-made calamities anywhere across the globe. This association has a long history of administration with smile to the suffering humankind. It has likewise helped those enduring social separation, financial deprivation and physical or mental inabilities.
The Indian Red Cross Society mobilized and sized itself up to the situation extending much needed relief to the victims and rehabilitation work.
Red Cross, Day is observed on May 8, being the birth anniversary of Jean Henri Dunant, founder of this great humanitarian movement across the globe and in 1864, the first Red Cross Society came into being. At first, it was limited to medical care and welfare of injured officers however later embraced other welfare fills in also. It serves the people without any consideration of caste, creed, colour, or faith.
The seven main principles of Red Cross Society are:
1. Humanity: The main aim is to protect the life, health and to ensure respect for every human being. It promotes understanding, friendship, and cooperation amongst all peoples.
2. Impartiality: No discrimination should be made because of nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. The first and foremost motive is to help the people solely based on their needs and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
3. Neutrality: The main purpose of this principle is to keep everyone neutral in if help and the movement should not be affected by political, racial, religious or ideological controversies.
4. Independence: We all know that this movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to obey the principles of the movement.
5. Voluntary Service: It is voluntary relief movement not prompted at all by desire for gain.
6. Unity: This organization must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.
7. Universality: The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all societies and people’s have equal status and share equal liabilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
Sh. Dinesh Gupta, Former AGM, RBI, Honorary Secretary, J&K branch of the Red Cross says that the organization is working on humanitarian tasks in this strategic and sensitive part of the country. The welfare work is increasing and so is the strength of the Red Cross. He spoke about different welfare schemes for the mentally, physically and socially handicapped and other distressed persons. Vocational training, Mobile dispensaries and blood banks are also arranged.
The J&K State Red Cross has its own website for facilities of the public to give further impetus to the volunteerism with the Red Cross movement.
The Red Cross has a heavy role of welfare both in war and peace time. It has constantly been taking up the troublesome task for the success of the bothered and hindered regions of the population by giving truly essential assistance. The Red Cross swung without hesitation and surged alleviation material to relieve sufferings of exploited people.
The spirit of Red Cross is being further streamlined and strengthened in sensitive Jammu and Kashmir by actively involving the youth and students in this generous work. Indian Red Cross Society is a national federation of over 700 branches in the country.
