Reforming Railways

Sir,
Recently, the Railway Minister has issued directions to undo the delays in arrival and departure of trains. The Ministry has issued instructions to affect career progression of these responsible for unnecessary delays. It is a welcome decision and will solve the problem to a large extent – if implemented on the ground.
In an era where Government is planning to introduce bullet train, the delay in trains for hours together  is unjustified. The trains are not only delayed but totally cancelled as well that makes the commuters to suffer heavily.
The Indian Railway is the largest carrier and lakhs of people travel through it across the country. But there are many handicaps in its functioning that need immediate attention. One is the delay that has been already discussed. Other major issue is the availability of seats. It sounds strange but it is a reality that trains run with many of the berths empty despite the fact that people are not able to get tickets on such trains.
Speaking out of experience, I myself was unable to manage a ticket on Jammu Rajdhani from Delhi to Jammu through proper means but by other way a  few days back. Despite the fact, I was shocked to find large number of berths vacant in the train. It directly influences the revenue generation. Such issue needs to be addressed for the convenience of passangers and financial health of the railways.
Piyush Goyal, the dynamic minister, has to prove different from the likes of Lalu and Mamta, who during their tenures, made claims only but failed to make any improvement at ground zero. The Indian Railway is the life line of India  and its health reflects the health of the nation.
Yours etc…
S M Pandit
