JAMMU, Dec 7: Three week inter disciplinary Refresher Course on Disaster Management for university and college teachers, being organized by the Human Resource Development Centre- HRDC, Jammu University, in collaboration with the Disaster Management Centre of JU, commenced here today.
The course was formally inaugurated by Amir Ali, Director, Disaster Management Authority of J&K Government while senior journalist Pradeep Dutta was the guest of honour at the Inaugural function.
Speaking on the occasion Amir Ali highlighted the various initiatives being taken by the J&K Government in order to make disaster management more responsive and effective. He also called upon the participating teachers to generate awareness about different community and individual initiatives that can reduce such disasters. He laid special emphasis on the lessons learnt from the recent floods and earthquakes that occurred in the State.
Pradeep Dutta enlightened the participants about the role of media in disaster management. He also quoted many personal instances that he experienced as a journalist while covering the floods and border shelling on J&K border.
Earlier, Prof Naresh Padha, Director HRDC, gave an overview about the Refresher Course and its academic and societal utility.
Prof Pankaj Srivastava, HOD Geology Department, underlined the need for more concerted effort in dealing with disasters.
Ranjeet Kalra, faculty member from HRDC, proposed a formal vote of Thanks on the occasion. Teachers from colleges and universities, both within and outside the State, are participating in the three week UGC sponsored course.
