SRINAGAR, Oct 5:
CPI(M) member Mohammad Yousuf Targami today raised in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly the issue of regularisation of hundreds of college teachers working on contractual basis in the state.
He also reminded the government that these teachers were on strike last year and the Ministry concerned had assured them to evolve a policy for their regularisation.
These teachers, who now comprise 70 per cent of total teaching staff of colleges, are there for nearly over five years and at verge of getting over aged, he said.
“This is a human problem and needs to be addressed without further delay,” Mr Targami said after he was allowed by Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone to speak before the start of Question Hour.
He said the teachers who fulfill all conditions of eligibility should be regularised.
Terming them lecturers on ‘academic arrangement’ and paying them a meager salary of Rs 12,000 and that too very irregularly is sheer exploitation, which is uncouth in a system which professes social justice and equality as its basic policy, he added.
The CPI(M) member said 1100 posts of college teachers that stand sanctioned by the cabinet are yet to be referred to recruiting agency resulting in uncertainty among the aspiring candidates and demanded that these posts be referred to Public Service Commission without any further delay.
During question hour, he raised the issue of opening of a women college at Kulgam.
He said this has been a long pending demand of the people of the district and the opening of a women college would enable large sections of girl students to avail the benefits, who otherwise are not able to pursue their higher education.
