Reinstate ousted Leighton, AFCON workers: CITU

JAMMU, July 18: Threatening to go on indefinite strike, the State Committee of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has demanded reinstatement of the terminated workers by the Leighton and AFCONS Companies’ management engaged in the four-laning of Jammu- Srinagar National Highway.
Addressing joint press conference CITU general secretary Om Parkash and senior leader Sham Parsad Kesar alleged that both these companies have terminated many workers from their jobs without citing any reason. They are providing jobs to the outsiders while the local workers are being ignored and allowances like height allowance, project allowance, dust allowance, winter allowances are not being paid to them violating labour laws.
They further alleged that the conversion of unskilled workers into trade man is also not being done. Disappointed with the negligent attitude of the management, CITU leaders warned the managements of the companies that they would be responsible if the workers would go on strike. “Both the companies should accept the pending demands of the workers and avoid termination as a tool to harass the workers.”
They appealed the Companies engaged in the four- laning of the highway from Jammu to Udhampur and Chenani to Nashri to resolve the pending demands of the construction workers working at the tunnel and on highway. They alleged that during strike of the workers nearly 30 workers were terminated by the Leighton company. AFCON also terminated nearly half a dozen workers.
The CITU leaders further alleged that the scheme workers such as ASHA, Anganwadi and Mid-day-Meal workers of the State who are getting a small amount of incentives only are not being covered under Minimum Wages Act and also not regularized. Labour laws are not implemented strictly and there is gross violation of Labour laws with the connivance of law enforcement machinery.
