LEH, May 18: To mark the auspicious occasion of 2563rd Buddha Jayanti celebration, thousands of people congregated at historical Polo ground with great zeal and enthusiasm.
The main event was the religious procession known as “Bhumskor” in which people in large numbers carrying sacred books went around Leh town along with twelve Jhankis (Tableau), depicting the twelve great enlightening deeds of Buddha.
Hundreds of children representing different schools also participated in the procession which commenced from Chowkhang Vihara via Namgyal Tsemo to culminate at Polo ground where people in large numbers were present to grace the occasion. The historical event organized by Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) began with lighting of traditional lamp “Chotmey”.
The chief guest on the occasion was Skaybje Togldan Rinpoche’s, who in his speech, mentioned about Buddha’s contribution to the entire humanity. He also highlighted the Buddha’s teachings.
Earlier, LBA president Tsewang Thinles in his welcome speech said that Ladakhi being Buddha’s follower live harmoniously setting examples to others. He asked Ladakhi public to pledge on this auspicious occasion to bring about changes in one’s life and also practice Buddha Dharma in its real sense. President Ladakh Gonpa Association Shetup Chamba also spoke on the occasion.
To promote the Bhoti Language in the Himalayan region, an essay writing competition was also organized by LBA Youth wing and the position holders students from various schools were awarded with citation, certificates and cash awards.
On the occasion, students of various schools sang devotional songs praising Lord Buddha. They also presented skit depicting the life history of Gautam Buddha.
In the evening all the monasteries as well as other religious places and residential buildings were illuminated to present a beautiful sight across Ladakh. A blood donation camp was also organized by LBA Youth wing in collaboration with Health Department.
LBA vice president Rinchen Namgyal, MLC Cherring Dorjey, LAHDC Chief Executive Councilor Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, ADDC Moses Kunzang, political heads, religious heads, district officers and other distinguish guests were also present on the occasion.
