JAMMU, Apr 26: A day after recording an all-time high 24 COVID deaths, the Union Territory breached the mark with 28 COVID-19 fatalities today including 17 in Jammu and 11 in Kashmir and 2135 fresh cases.
Jammu region recorded 791 cases today.
Among the fatalities in Jammu region were a 22-year-old woman from Mahore in Reasi district, three other women, an Arya Samaj preacher hailing from Kolkata in West Bengal, an ex-serviceman, two kin of Army personnel and a 59-year-old man from New Delhi. Three COVID victims were brought dead to the hospitals from their homes by the family members. A total of 13 deaths were reported in Jammu district, two Udhampur and one each in Reasi and Rajouri districts.
Fifty five years old Sukhdev Shastri, a preacher of Arya Samaj, who hailed from Sewa Gram in Krishna Nagar area of Kolkata and was presently putting up at Rehari Colony, was brought dead to the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu by the police. He tested positive for COVID-19, GMC Medical Superintendent Dr Dara Singh said.
A 22-year-old woman died of bleeding disorder and heart failure in the GMC Jammu. She hailed from Mahore in Reasi district and was presently putting up at Bishnah. She was positive for the virus.
An ex-serviceman aged 62 belonging to village Palma in Rajouri district died of multiple ailments and Coronavirus in GH Rajouri while two kin of Army personnel succumbed to the virus in Command Hospital Udhampur and Military Hospital Satwari. One of them was a woman hailing from Krimchi Tikri in Udhampur district.
A 75-year-old man from Sector 2 Channi Himmat died of COVID in the Chest Diseases Hospital Jammu tonight within half an hour after hospitalization, Medical Superintendent Dr Rajeshwar Sharma said.
A 59-year-old man from Kalibari Mandir Marg in New Delhi, presently putting up at Sanjay Nagar Jammu and an 87-year-old woman from Gadigarh succumbed to the virus in GMC Jammu late tonight.
A 55-year-old man from Reasi and 49-year-old from Mantalai Chenani in Udhampur district died of COVID in the GMC Jammu and PGI Chandigarh respectively while 87-year-old from Janipura Jammu succumbed to the virus in ASCOMS Sidhra.
A 45-year-old woman from Satwari died of virus in EMC Hospital Amritsar while 86-year-old from Barnai and elderly citizens from Sarwal and Nanak Nagar breathed their last in the GMC Jammu. An 80-year-old man from New Rehari was brought dead to the GMC Jammu.
Meanwhile, a KAS officer posted as the District Information Officer (DIO) in Doda and his three family members today tested positive for COVID-19.
Forty two tourist-cum-travelers at Lakhanpur and 42 in Reasi district tested positive for COVID-19 today.
Among those tested positive at Lakhanpur, the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir in Kathua district, include 11 from Punjab, four Haryana, three each Bihar and Rajasthan, two Uttar Pradesh and one New Delhi besides 18 residents of J&K. In Reasi district, 42 tourist/travelers were found infected, mostly at Katra Railway Station.
Three staff members in Gool branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Ramban district tested positive for COVID today after which District Magistrate Mussarat Islam ordered closure of the branch for 48 hours.
Jammu district continued to account for nearly 60 percent COVID positive cases in the region.
Among 791 fresh cases in the region, 472 alone were reported from Jammu district followed by 135 in Reasi, 46 Rajouri, 33 each Doda and Kathua, 22 Poonch, 20 Udhampur, 13 each Samba and Kishtwar and four in Ramban district.
As many as 478 persons recovered from the virus today including 211 in Jammu district, 85 Reasi, 70 Udhampur, 46 Kathua, 31 Kishtwar, 10 Poonch, nine each Ramban and Samba, six Rajouri and one in Doda district.
Jammu region now has 65309 Coronavirus cases. Number of the active cases now stood at 8488 as 55993 have recovered from the virus.
Fresh casualties have taken the Jammu region’s Corona toll to 831, the maximum 444 being in Jammu district, 65 Doda, 63 Udhampur, 60 Rajouri, 59 Kathua, 46 Samba, 31 Poonch, 23 Ramban, 22 Kishtwar and 18 in Reasi district.
District Magistrate Jammu Anshul Garg today declared more areas as micro-Containment Zones after COVID positive cases were reported from the localities.
The micro-Containment Zones include Bhagatpur area, Niabat Office Rakh Bahu, in and around Imperial Flats, Mohalla Charkan up to Thanger Pulli including area around Ration Depot, Ward No. 51 Channi Himmat and Sector E in Sainik Colony.
Meanwhile, the Union Territory of Ladakh today reported two Corona casualties including a youth from Jharkhand and a local woman besides 120 fresh cases.
A 27-year-old youth from Jharkhand, who had come to Leh for work, died of COVID. A 54-year-old woman from Suboo Leh also succumbed to the virus.
Among 120 new cases, 104 were reported from Leh and 16 from Kargil district.
Ladakh’s Corona deaths have gone up to 138 including 94 in Leh and 44 in Kargil while total cases have jumped to 13357. There are 2027 active cases while 11192 have recovered from the virus.
Following surge in cases, District Magistrate Leh Shrikant Balasaheb Suse today ordered reduction in strength in all district and subordinate offices to 50 percent while rest will work from home. The order said the district officers will conduct meeting through video conferencing and other modes of virtual meeting.
He also ordered imposition of night curfew in Leh district from 9 pm to 5 am. Non-essential services shall not be allowed during curfew without prior permission of the District Magistrate.
Class work will also remain suspended till May 15 in Polytechnics, ITIs and other institutions imparting skill training. Dining places in hotels and restaurants will also run with 50 percent capacity, the DC’s order said, adding the hotels and restaurants should encourage home delivery service.
LG’s daughter admitted in GMC
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s daughter was today admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu after she complained of nausea.
Anubhuti Sharma, daughter of Sinha was examined by a joint team of doctors from Medicines, Cardiology and Neurology Departments of the GMC Jammu after which she was advised admission in the GMC Jammu.
She is under observation in the ICU, doctors said, adding her tests are normal. However, some tests will be repeated tomorrow.
Anubhuti had taken her second dose of COVID vaccine yesterday. Doctors, however, said her problems have nothing to do with the vaccine.
