SRINAGAR, Apr 24: Communist Party of India (M) has been reiterating the removal of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act since long.
In a press statement here CPI (M) leader, MY Tarigami said the unbridled powers enjoyed by the security forces have led to egregious human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir and in North- East states.
The statement of Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh that all three wings of defence forces are in favour of the removal of AFSPA from the North East and Jammu and Kashmir reflects that the Government has finally realized that the law has resulted in human rights abuses.
The colonial era law, which has no place in modern society fosters a regime of impunity among the security forces.
Kashmir has been witnessing gross human rights abuses since the draconian law was enacted in 1990.
The 2020 Amshipora, Shopian stage-managed encounter in which three poor labourers from Rajouri were killed and later passed off as militants is the recent addition to the list of fake encounters.
CPI(M) has always steadfastly called for the repeal of the law from both Jammu and Kashmir and North East. The party has been raising its voice at different forums against the controversial law.
Although the Government’s realization to remove the law is late, it’s better late than never. CPI(M) leader urged upon the government to repeal these atrocious laws without any further delay.
