While lodging their protest over the decision of the Central Government during a press conference at Kargil today, CEC LAHDC Kargil Mohd Zaffar Akhoon and Councilor Nasir Munshi said that imposing a cut in the annual budget of the UT of Ladakh is great injustice with the people of the region.
Munshi said instead of increasing Budget, a reduction of Rs 976 crores has been imposed as compared to the previous one. He said there is strong resentment among the people of Ladakh over this act of the Central Government.
He further said that it was claimed by the Union Government that a special financial assistance of Rs 50,000 crores will be provided to the UT of Ladakh in phased manner but that promise has also remained unfulfilled.
Referring to the decision of providing additional districts to Ladakh, Munshi said Leh is being provided three, while Kargil is getting only two districts. This is great injustice with the people of Kargil. The Union Government has set aside the important criteria of population and other parameters for the same. He threatened to launch agitation if Kargil was not sanctioned three districts.
In Leh, opposition leader in the Hill Council and Congress president, Tsering Namgyal while talking to media persons strongly condemned the decision of the Central Government to impose reduction in the annual budget.
Namgyal said that since the formation of UT, Ladakh used to receive nearly Rs 6000 cr annual budget. Previously it was Rs 5998 crores. A cut of Rs 976 crore is very serious issue. He said Rs 300 crore was the Council’s budget. Showing good performance, the Councilors spent over 90 percent of it every year. But now this budget has also been reduced and brought to Rs 234 crores.
Opposition leader said instead of increasing. they reduced it. Namgyal who was flanked by all the opposition Councillors demanded that Lt Governor, Brig BD Mishra must take up the issue with the Union Government.
