JAMMU, July 3: District Development Council (DDC) Member of Territorial Constituency Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony has urged upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to reserve two seats in J&K Legislative Assembly (LA) for Sikh community members so that the community may get due representation in the affairs of Union Territory and also an opportunity to raise voice of Sikhs in LA.
In a handout Tony said that refugees were settled on Indo-Pak borders right from Poonch to Kathua in 1947, 1965 and 1971 and majority of them are from Sikh community.
He said while most of the rights of refugees got restored with the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35-A after decades of discrimination, now it is time to provide these people right to say in the affairs of governance and this can be best assured only by reserving at least two seats in the LA of J&K for Sikhs.
He expressed hope that his demand would be taken care of in the revival and rejuvenation of the democratic process of this newly formed Union Territory of J&K.
Tony also asked all the political parties to raise the Sikhs reservation issue before the ECI if these parties want votes from Sikh community.
