Doctors of Government hospitals across the country, including in the national capital, staged a protest today against the rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctor at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata last week with a demand for justice for the victim. Pertinently, semi-naked body of a 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar hall of the Hospital on last Thursday night.
The protest march in Jammu was taken out from GMC to Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) in support of the nationwide protest call given by Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA). A large number of Resident doctors from not only GMC Jammu but also its Associated Hospitals participated in the protest march and demanded justice for the victim doctor.
Doctors raised slogans calling for justice to the victim while holding placards, some of which read “we stand in solidarity with the victim”, “no mercy for rapists” and “raise your voice before you become the next victim”. The protest by the junior doctors affected the regular work in GMC and AHs Jammu but the emergency services continued without any disruption.
Speaking to media persons, a protesting female doctor said, “We also work in night shifts and we do not feel safe given lack of proper security arrangements.” She said the Government should come out with a comprehensive security plan inside the emergency wards and other parts of the Hospitals, particularly during night hours to restore the shaken confidence of the doctors.
Displaying a placard which read “hands that heal should not bleed”, a doctor said they are facing safety concerns, especially during the night hours when there are no security guards around. “We are providing healthcare service to the people and we want our Government to ensure our safety at the workplace,” another female doctor said.
In GMC Srinagar, RDA expressed grief over the alleged murder of a female resident doctor in Kolkata Hospital, terming it “abhorrent” and stressing the need for justice and systemic reforms. “The circumstances surrounding her death are a grim reminder of the violence faced by women across the country and the need for a robust legal response,” the Association said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Doctors Association Jammu (DAJ) strongly condemned the brutal rape and murder of Kolkata doctor in Hospital premises. “It is a shocking incident and irreparable loss of the future doctors for the family, profession, society and nation as whole. Every week, we hear news of violence against doctors in one or other part of the country. Our association will fight tooth and nail for the safety and security of our doctors, especially junior doctors who are more vulnerable to such brutality,” said DAJ president, Dr Balvinder Singh in a statement.
