KISHTWAR, Jan 29: The residents of village Kiyar held protest and demanded compensation for the losses they suffered due to cloudburst.
While talking to media persons, the residents said that cloudburst took place in the upper reached of village Kiyar in Tehsil Dachhan. “We started running out of houses. The sudden rise in river Kiyar resulted in widespread loss of property. Apart from damaging 6 houses, 4 water mills, 1 mosque, 1 temple and 6 cow sheds, the sudden gush of rain left horrible damage to public property and land”, the residents said, adding that besides a bridge, the standing corps were also damaged in the cloudburst.
“There was no loss of life reported due to cloudburst”, the protesting residents said.
The cloudburst also damaged a bridge thereby effecting the movement of the people, they said, adding that the water level in the river Kiyar is increasing day by day, but the disappointing thing is that till now no team has been sent from the district administration’s side.
“A major portion of the Kiyar-Surnoo road also got washed away due to cloudburst. Several trees were uprooted in the flash floods that followed the cloudburst and agricultural land is also totally damaged. The Kiyar-Surnoo road stretch is the only road connectivity to thousands of people living in the areas of Kiyar and Surnoo”, the residents informed, adding that beside the above mentioned issues, we are facing acute shortage of essential commodities because of non- availability of roads and bridges.
The protesting residents have appealed to the District Administration especially DC Kishtwar to visit the spot, assess the losses and provide compensation accordingly.
