Resistance to the winds of change

Prof.  M L Raina
The socio-political level existing in the country is progressively going down, hitting hard the level of national character which too is ruefully on the downslide.
The political culture, having its roots in the near past, is so much steeped in stark negativity that all efforts, to bring in positivity, face tough resistance which is in tune with the stinking cesspool of the present political goings-on.
In the hurly-burly of the socio-political scenario wherein “fair is foul, and foul is fair” all the time-tested good values, which possess the potential to keep the the country’s ship on an even keel, have turned topsy turvy. Political morality, which ought to have touched its zenith in the present age of reason and enlightenment of outlook, is fast nose-diving to  its nadir of darkness.
The reason for this ominous fall is not for to seek; it lies in our inordiante lust for political power that opens out the gates of the ever luring wealth and authority to rule the roost in the public affairs and thereby shine and attain social recognition- all this to remain immersed in a pool of delight and lasting bliss.
Let us have a look at the negatively charged political cauldron and see what is brewing therein. The chief among numerous dark and droosy contents are visibly inveterate hate of change for the better, stiff opposition of positive measures for the holistic good, and for pulling out the downtrodden from the chronic quagmire of want and misery through result oriented actions.
“Time is out of joint”. And Modi was born to set it right. After long years there has appeared on the national scene a leader who possesses extraordinary physical and intellectual energy, coupled with unparalleled patriotic ferver, and more importantly his political sagacity and innovative methodology, and last but not least his genuine concern and love for the masses.
Why has this man of the masses and promise of the country become an eye-sore for the leaders of the opposition parties who leave no chance to attack him hammer and tongs. It is so because they are fixated in respect of the age-old and chronic reversal of the political values, honesty and high stands of morality. As such they have developed numbness of sensitivity to what is and what should have been. The evils of moral corruption, dishonesty, amassing of money through foul means and flagrant violations of rules, have gone deep into their blood and bones and become parts of their personalities, with the result that all the  abhorrent things, appear to be normal to these ‘vegetables’ of Indian politics. This explains why any change to change the deep rooted debilitating social and political order is repugnant to them.
These people appear to have developed allergy for the winds of change that are afloat in all directions. But these promising winds have turned into allergens for them. These have attacked their soft and sensitive membranes inside with the result that they  continuously  sneeze out and cough out their irritating illness-causing droplets of all that is trash. In desperation they have discovered timely anecdotes for combating the sporadic attacks of their chronic allergy. These are of varying potency to be used for varying allergic onslaught. These are in the shape of venomous speeches, undignified language, nasty words that malign, abuses and invectives demeaning in nature, fabricated charges and childish remarks, bordering on slander, and what have you- all these are the medications to relieve their allergic reactions to get relief.
Wallowing in the negatively charged “Slough of Despond”, these shock striken angels, fallen from grace, leave no trick untried to regain the Paradise they have lost through their sins. It has dawned upon them that they are no match for Modi, the veritable colossus on the present political scene, when they look at him they feel dwarfed to the size of pigmies. When he declares that he has come to bring order out of chaos, they feel jittery and are at their wits end to know how to size themselves up to the stature of this political giant. In their minds they seem to tell him that, to translate a Kashmiri proverb rather loosely -“We will scratch your legs, what though we may not be able to scale your height”. They lengthen out their tongues and speak daggers at him which are both ridiculous and ludicrous. Kejirewal’s tomfoolery is a case in point when he jumped unexpectedly onto the seat of power in Delhi, he made quixotic statements. At that point of time we wondered whether there was madness in his method or method in his madness. This time what he says is madness and madness all the way. Congress, the largest opposition party and all regional parties who  have a deep dislike for Modi, spit venom at the latter and his party. It is an apt saying that a desperate man all things can. These crestfallen parties have brought politics to a level of mediocrity and disgrace. They will go to any length in throwing political and moral ethics to the winds to regain the lost political authority, not for the society, but for power, pelf and plunder. But will they succeed in their game is a million dollar question. They realise that because of their loss of self confidence, political nerve and stamina, they can’t fight Modi singly. So they have decided to set up a united front, to pool their resources, and join their heads and hands to give a concerted fight to Modi to remove him from the political scene. But the people can aptly weigh their intent against that of Modi who has down deep in his heart a genuine desire to uplift the Indian society economically, without consideration of caste, colour and religious creed. A part of his mission is a continuous crusade against corruption and ill-gotten wealth which have caused social and economic disparity.
Some of these representatives of the people have pitiably lost their sense of shame. Skeletons have begun to tumble out of their cupboards and yet they are still grumbling against Modi, an embodiment of honesty and integrity. The fact of the matter is that all the political chatter-boxes have developed withdrawal symptoms and are helplessly writhing in pain like drug addicts.
The opposition leaders of all hues will do well to shun the ill-conceived attitude of attrition, cleanse their minds of negativity and start doing everything positive.  As  responsible representatives of people, especially those inside the Parliament, must adopt the policy of nation over self. They have to realise that they have a great role to play as watch-dogs of the Govt.
If they oppose any move  or moves constructively, with good intentions, they will be doing great service to the nation and at the same time regain their lost credibility as conscious and responsible opposition.
It is not in their interest, nor in the Nation’s interest, to throw spanners in the path Modi has selected for the inclusive progress and development. They have to realise that Modi is the man of the masses and can’t be dislodged.
