Restrictions in Srinagar to thwart Mirwaiz rally

SRINAGAR, June 20: Authorities today imposed curfew like restrictions in parts of Srinagar city to thwart the proposed march to Municipal Park called by Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman and head of Awami Action Committee (AAC) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to celebrate Golden Jubilee of the AAC.
Authorities imposed curfew like restrictions in old city area of Srinagar and hundreds of police and paramilitary troopers were deployed since morning in the area to thwart separatist march. Police had erected steel barricades and blocked main roads leading to old city with concertina wire. However, situation remained peaceful and there was no untoward incident.
Restrictions have been imposed in old Srinagar areas Friday falling under jurisdiction of Police Stations of Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, MR Gunj, Khanyar and Rainawari.
In view of the curfew like restrictions, schools, shops and business establishments were shut, and vehicles remained off the roads in most parts of Srinagar city.
Dozens of Hurriyat activists were detained by police to foil their march toward the park.
Police and CRPF had also sealed SK Municipal Park near the City centre to prevent anyone from entering the park. Mirwaiz was scheduled to host a mega convention in the park, but police had placed Mirwaiz under house arrest in Nigeen.
Police and CRPF had also blocked the roads and lanes leading to historic Jamia Masjid and no Friday prayers were offered there today.
Mirwaiz denounced the foiling of his rally. He said that National Conference has been always scuttling the programmes framed by Awami Action Committee for the last many decades.
The Hurriyat chairman termed foiling of the rally, his house arrest, arrest and house arrest of other separatist leaders and activists as glaring example of dictatorial politics of the Government.
