KATHUA, Dec 29: A retired Deputy Commandant of BSF committed suicide late last night at his residence in Ward No 5 Kathua by shooting himself with his licensed double barrel gun.
He has been identified as Jaidev Singh Andotra, 74. Police said Mr Andotra was lone at his residence and his wife Manju Andotra had died one and a half year ago while his two daughters were married outside the State.
Police suspects aloofness was the main cause of his extreme step. Mr Andotra who was staying alone at his residence had a servant who cooks meals for him during the day and also performs the other domestic work. He goes to his home during the night daily. Last night Mr Andotra took out his gun and shot himself dead as he could not resist the continued aloofness. As the house was locked from inside his relatives living in the vicinity could not hear the sound of the gun shot, police added.
Police said when the servant came in the morning as usual he saw the door locked inside and after his repeated knocking of the door Andotra did not respond. He opened the door forcibly and to his surprise he saw the owner of the house lying in a pool of blood. He called his relatives and other neighbours. Later Police took the dead body into its custody and after postmortem it was handed over to the relatives for cremation.
A large number of people including prominent people from Jammu and Delhi reached Kathua to attend his cremation.
The Kathua Police has registered a case under Section 174.
