RAMBAN, Sept 6: Two Revenue officials, including a Naib Tehsildar (NT), were allegedly thrashed by some cops in Ramban district which triggered a protest by their colleagues and clerical staff.
Though senior officials remained tight-lipped over the incident that took place at hill resort of Sanasar late on Tuesday, sources said that a team led by Ramban Deputy Commissioner visited the scene to gather first-hand information.
Sources said that the Naib Tehsildar and his subordinate Patwari were allegedly roughed up and locked inside their office at Sanasar by a police party that was agitated over the removal of some tents on a piece of land taken over by the police.
They said the police had sought the transfer of a piece of land from the Revenue Department last year but the application was rejected and cops were asked to vacate the land.
“When they failed to vacate, Revenue Department employees seized the tents and boards installed by the police there,” sources claimed.
The incident triggered protests by Revenue employees outside the office of Deputy Commissioner demanding action against the erring cops.
“All clerical staff of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and Revenue Department went on strike and staged a protest against the highhandedness of police,” Ramban Patwar Association leader, Harjeet Singh said.
The protesters were demanding immediate suspension of the guilty cops and a high-level inquiry into the incident.
The protesting Patwar Association/Revenue Association of District Ramban alleged that cops trespassed into Niabat Sanasar, broke locks and destroyed revenue records of Niabat Sanasar.
They also alleged that the cops committed other illegal acts also followed by criminal intimidation by police personnel from Police Post Patnitop headed by Incharge Police Post Susheel Kumar Sharma allegedly in connivance with SHO Batote.
The protesters also demanded lodging of an FIR and immediate suspension of cops involved in the “criminal acts”.
