SRINAGAR, Jan 22:  A road leading to Bandipora Town of North Kashmir today caved in at Hajin Township due to illegal sand extraction by locals.
Locals of Hajin said that due to illegal and continuous sand extraction in Jhelum River, the road caved in. “It’s all because of illegal sand extraction. We in the past lodged several complaints against these sand extractors but no action was taken,” they said.
Reports said top officials rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. Miffed at the alleged inaction of the authorities, the locals observed a shutdown in the Hajin area.
Sub District Magistrate (SDM) Hajin, Moin Kakroo admitted that the road caved in due to illegal extraction of sand.
The SDM said that they have relocated some families from the spot. “We have also opened up a link road for smooth movement of transport,” he said. The top official said that the repair work would be started tomorrow by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
He also said that the strict action would be taken this time against the illegal sand extractors. “We won’t allow any illegal work now and strict action would be initiated,” he added.
