SRINAGAR, Jan 6: Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kashmir, Qazi Irfan Rasool, today stressed the need to create a culture of road safety in Kashmir to make commuting on roads safe and secure.
Speaking with media persons on the sidelines of a training program organized for officers of the traffic police and the Transport Department, he said, “900-1000 lives are lost annually due to traffic accidents.”
He stressed that the concerned stakeholders must play a key role, with a special focus on creating awareness among young people.
Qazi also noted that India has the highest rate of traffic accidents and contributes 11 percent of accidents reported worldwide, despite having only 1 percent of the total vehicles globally.
“The main reason for accidents is human negligence, which leads to 70% of accidents reported each year,” he said.
He added: “We must create a culture of road safety in Kashmir, where adherence to rules is not considered unusual. We need to ensure safer and better commuting on roads.”
RTO added that violations such as overspeeding, not using helmets and seatbelts, and other infractions lead to accidents.
“I am also advocating for the inclusion of traffic rules in the curriculum so that students become aware of them at an early stage,” he said.
