Road safety reforms

Sir,
I write with deep concern about the alarming statistics revealed in the recent report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The surge in road accidents by 12% in 2022, resulting in the tragic loss of 19 lives every hour, is a cause for national distress. It is disheartening to learn that even straight roads, which should be safer, have become primary accident sites.
Moreover, the majority of these accidents occur in sparsely populated areas, and the most vulnerable road users are two-wheeler riders, often rear-ended by other vehicles. The current road safety measures, including heavy fines and the construction of highways, seem to be falling short in curbing accidents. It is evident that effective enforcement of traffic rules is challenging, and many commuters engage in dangerous practices. We urgently need a comprehensive approach that includes infrastructure improvements, stringent law enforcement, and extensive public awareness campaigns. To prevent further loss of life, we must begin instilling safe driving habits from the very beginning of learning to drive. Our nation’s safety depends on taking swift and effective action to address these distressing statistics.
